IELTS Academic vs General Training
Which module your destination accepts, what actually differs between the two (less than you think), why General Training is not the easy option, and how to make sure you book the right one once.
Which IELTS do I need?
The module is decided by the organisation you are sending the result to, not by you. The rule of thumb: study and professional registration take Academic; migration and work take General Training, with two big exceptions in the table.

Two exceptions trip people up every year: Canada PR, which refuses Academic outright, and Australia, which takes either. When in doubt, the organisation's own English-requirement page is the only source that counts.
What is the same in both?
Three of the four papers are identical, and so is the day. Listening is 30 minutes, four parts, 40 questions, played once. Speaking is 11 to 14 minutes with an examiner, three parts, and the examiner does not know or care which module you booked. Writing Task 2 is the same 250-word essay, marked on the same four criteria, and it counts for twice as much as Task 1. The 9-band scale, the fee, the venue, the ID rules and the result timeline are all shared.

Is General Training easier?
Not in the way people hope. The Reading texts are easier to understand, so the examiners demand more correct answers for the same band, and the gap is four questions at band 7.0. Many candidates find a letter easier than a bar chart, but Task 1 is only a third of the Writing score. Listening and Speaking are word for word the same test. Nobody has ever gained a band by picking General Training, and plenty have lost an application by sitting the module their destination does not accept.
Can I change module after booking?
Only by transferring the booking. Each provider has a transfer fee and a deadline, and inside the deadline the change can cost most of the fee: in Bangladesh a transfer is ৳3,000, in India ₹3,200 to ₹4,850 depending on the test type. The module you sat is printed on your Test Report Form. Confirm the requirement in writing from the university, regulator or immigration authority, then book once.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use IELTS Academic for Canada PR (Express Entry)?
No. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts IELTS General Training only for Express Entry and the other economic immigration programmes. An Academic result, however high, is not accepted for PR. Book General Training if Canada PR is the goal.
Can I use General Training to apply to a university?
Almost never. Universities, colleges and professional bodies ask for Academic because its Reading and Writing Task 1 test the skills a degree course needs. A handful of below-degree or vocational programmes accept General Training; the course page will say so if it does.
Is the fee different for Academic and General Training?
No. In every country we track (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and others) both modules cost the same, and the UKVI versions of both cost the same as each other. The module changes what you sit, not what you pay.
Is General Training easier than Academic?
The General Training Reading texts are easier to read, but you need more correct answers for the same band: about 34 out of 40 for band 7.0 against about 30 out of 40 on Academic. Listening, Speaking and Writing Task 2 are identical and marked identically. Choose by what your destination accepts, not by which looks easier.
Do nurses need Academic or General Training?
Academic. The Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK, AHPRA in Australia and the nursing regulators in Ireland and New Zealand all ask for IELTS Academic. Most also set the bar at 7.0 overall, so the choice of module is only the first hurdle.
Which one do I need for a UK student visa?
Academic. If your university is a licensed sponsor teaching at degree level it can accept a standard IELTS Academic and assess your English itself. If the course is below degree level, or the sponsor asks for a Secure English Language Test, you need IELTS for UKVI (Academic), which is the same test taken at an approved centre.
Can I switch from Academic to General Training after booking?
Only by transferring the booking under the provider’s transfer rules, which carry a fee and a deadline. The module is fixed when you book and is printed on your Test Report Form, so an organisation that needs one will reject the other. Check the requirement first, then book.
