IELTS Results Explained
When results arrive, how you receive them, how many organisations get them free, how long they last, what a re-mark costs and when it is refunded, and the mistakes that hold a result up.
When do IELTS results come out?

Providers are usually inside the range: IDP India 1 to 2 days, IDP Vietnam within 2, British Council Sri Lanka 1 to 3, British Council Pakistan 3 to 5, IDP Nepal 3 to 5. Each country guide gives the local figure.
How do I receive them?
The band appears first as an online preview in your provider's portal. Your official proof is the Test Report Form, on paper or as an electronic TRF you download; the British Council in Sri Lanka now issues the electronic form only. ielts.org states that results can be posted to up to five organisations free of charge, with a processing fee beyond that (৳2,400 per form at IDP Bangladesh), and shared electronically with as many organisations as you like through the IELTS Results Service, which is what most universities and immigration authorities now use.
What does a re-mark cost?
An Enquiry on Results must be requested within six weeks of your result, is refunded in full if any band changes, and is answered in anything from two hours to 21 days. The fee is set locally:

The test to apply: is one section out of line with the other three and with your practice scores, and would half a band change the outcome? If yes to both, the fee is a fair bet, since it comes back when the band moves. If your scores landed where your mocks said they would, keep the money for a One Skill Retake.
How long is a result valid?
The IELTS partners recommend two years, and the organisations that matter apply it: Canada wants a result under two years old at both the Express Entry profile and the application, Immigration New Zealand no more than two years old when you apply, the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council two years. Book the test when the application is in sight, not a year early.
What delays a result?

How many days after the test do IELTS results come?
ielts.org gives 1 to 5 days for IELTS on computer and for IELTS for UKVI, up to 13 days for a paper test, and up to 9 days for UKVI Life Skills. Providers are often faster: IDP India says 1 to 2 days, IDP Vietnam within 2, the British Council in Sri Lanka 1 to 3, the British Council in Pakistan 3 to 5. Writing on Paper in India takes 7 days.
How do I check my IELTS result?
Sign in to the candidate portal of the provider you booked with (IDP, the British Council or a partner such as AEO or IALF). The band appears as an online preview first, then your Test Report Form follows, on paper or as an electronic TRF you download from the same portal.
How many Test Report Forms do I get?
One for yourself. ielts.org states you can have results sent by post to up to five organisations free of charge, with a processing fee for more, and shared electronically through the IELTS Results Service with as many organisations as you like. IDP Bangladesh charges ৳2,400 per extra posted form beyond five.
How long is an IELTS result valid?
The IELTS partners recommend a two-year validity period, and most organisations apply it: Canada requires a result less than two years old when you submit an Express Entry profile and application, Immigration New Zealand no more than two years old at the time you apply, and the NMC accepts scores for two years. Some universities are more lenient. Check the organisation, not the test.
What is an Enquiry on Results and is it worth it?
A re-mark of one or more sections by senior examiners, requested within six weeks of your result. The fee is refunded in full if any band changes. It is worth it when one section is out of line with the rest and half a band would change your application; it is a poor bet when every section landed where your practice said it would.
Why would a result be delayed or withheld?
Results can be held for quality or identity checks, and a name that does not match your passport can delay or void a form. Sit the test with the same original document you booked with, spelled the same way, and keep the booking reference until the TRF is in your hands.
