IELTS Score for Canada PR
The official CLB table, what each Express Entry programme needs, what CLB 9 is worth in points against CLB 7, the two rules that catch South Asian applicants every year, and what a study permit really asks for.
The CLB to IELTS table
Canada scores language in Canadian Language Benchmarks, and IRCC publishes the conversion for IELTS General Training. The table is uneven on purpose: Listening runs half a band ahead of the other three at the top.

Read from the Express Entry language-testing page on canada.ca (date modified 22 June 2026) on 22 September 2026. Your CLB is assessed per ability, so one 6.5 in Reading makes that ability CLB 8 even if the other three are CLB 9.

What CLB 9 is worth in points
The Comprehensive Ranking System pays for language twice: once in core points per ability, and again in the skill-transferability tiers, where CLB 9 in all four abilities is the key that turns a degree or foreign work experience into 50 points instead of 25.

A single applicant at CLB 9 across the board holds 56 core points more than one at CLB 7, before the transferability bonuses. In IELTS terms that is the distance between 6.0 in each and 8.0 in Listening with 7.0 in the rest. With a spouse the per-ability figures are 16, 22 and 29 for CLB 7, 8 and 9.
The two rules that catch applicants

What about a study permit?
IRCC lists no language test among the study permit requirements, and the Student Direct Stream that did require one ended on 8 November 2024. The bar is set by the institution and it takes Academic: the University of Toronto asks for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, the University of British Columbia 6.5 with no part below 6.0. Colleges generally ask for less; the programme page is the source.
Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for Canada PR?
It depends on the programme. Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 in all four abilities, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in each. Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3. Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening and CLB 4 in Reading and Writing. But the minimum only makes you eligible: the score that wins an invitation is CLB 9, which is Listening 8.0 and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Can I use IELTS Academic for Express Entry?
No. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts the IELTS General Training test only, alongside CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada. An Academic result is not accepted, however high.
Does IRCC accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
No. The canada.ca language-testing page states that One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry. If one section falls short, you sit the full General Training test again.
What is CLB 9 worth compared with CLB 7?
A single applicant earns 31 core points per ability at CLB 9 against 17 at CLB 7, so 124 against 68 across the four abilities, a 56-point gap. CLB 9 in all four also unlocks the higher skill-transferability tiers: a degree scores up to 50 points with CLB 9 against 25 with CLB 7, and three or more years of foreign work experience 50 against 25.
Why is Listening 8.0 for CLB 9 when the others are 7.0?
Because the conversion table is uneven by design. Listening steps from 7.5 at CLB 8 to 8.0 at CLB 9, while Reading, Writing and Speaking step from 6.5 to 7.0. Candidates who aim for 7.0 across the board and get it land at CLB 8 in Listening and lose the tier. Aim at 8.0 in Listening from the start.
How old can my IELTS result be?
Less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent residence application. A result that expires between the two stops the application.
What IELTS score do I need for a Canadian study permit?
