How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Your overall band is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band with a rule that favours the candidate: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Example: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0 gives an average of 6.25, reported as overall band 6.5. But 6.0, 6.0, 6.0, 6.5 averages 6.125, which rounds down to 6.0.

Frequently asked questions
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
The overall band is the average of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) rounded to the nearest half band. Averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band and averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 gives an average of 6.25, which becomes an overall band of 6.5.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?
Around 30 correct answers out of 40 is typically band 7.0 in IELTS Listening, based on the conversion tables published in official practice materials. Each real test version is calibrated separately, so the exact threshold can shift by a mark.
Why do Academic and General Training Reading use different tables?
Because General Training Reading texts are easier on average, you need more correct answers for the same band: roughly 30 out of 40 is band 7.0 on Academic, while General Training requires about 34 out of 40 for band 7.0.
Are Writing and Speaking scored out of 40 too?
No. Writing and Speaking have no raw score. Examiners (or IELTSLab’s AI examiner in practice mode) score them from 0 to 9 against four criteria each, such as Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy for Writing.
Is a half band like 6.5 possible in every section?
Yes. All four sections are reported in whole and half bands (for example 5.5, 6.0, 6.5), and the overall band is also always a whole or half band.
