IELTS Exam Fee in the UAE (2026)

How much is the IELTS exam fee in the UAE?
As of 22 September 2026, these are the fees on IDP UAE's own pages and on the British Council's Abu Dhabi and Dubai centre listings. The two providers no longer match, and pages still quoting AED 1,450 for UKVI or AED 710 for Life Skills predate IDP's December 2025 rise.

What other charges can come up?
The test fee is the whole price of sitting the test. These are the charges and rules that apply when something changes:

How do I pay, and what do I bring?
IDP: Visa or Mastercard online, cash at an IDP branch when you register in person, or bank transfer. Pay within two days or the seat is released. British Council: online card payment. Neither provider states a surcharge. A few details catch candidates out:

Where can I sit IELTS in the UAE?
IDP tests in Dubai (Sheikh Zayed Road, Knowledge Park and Motor City), Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, and lists Al Ain, Ajman and Fujairah without dates this month. The British Council tests in Abu Dhabi (Al Bateen), Dubai (Oud Metha, Al Nahda and Academic City) and Al Ain, and describes about forty locations across the Emirates. When do results come out?
1 to 5 days for IELTS on Computer at IDP, 13 days if you chose Writing on Paper, and 7 days for Life Skills. Results stay online for 28 days and you receive an electronic Test Report Form, which universities and immigration bodies accept directly.
How do I avoid paying AED 1,470 twice?
Only book when your practice band already meets your target. The most common mistake in the UAE is booking on hope: a candidate needing 7.0 for a nursing registration or a Canadian application books at a practice level of 6.0, falls short, and pays the whole fee again, with nothing back inside the five-week window. Take full mock tests until your score is stable at or above target. If one section lets you down on test day, a One Skill Retake at AED 962 within 60 days at IDP is cheaper than a full resit, as long as the organisation you are applying to accepts it. A month of unlimited AI-scored practice costs under 2% of one exam fee.

Why do IDP and the British Council charge different fees in the UAE?
They used to match. IDP raised its UKVI, Life Skills and UKVI retake fees on 1 December 2025 and left the standard test at AED 1,470; the British Council’s centre listings moved to AED 1,590 during 2026. Same test, same marking, so the AED 120 difference is real money for nothing unless the venue or date suits you better.
What is Writing on Paper and does it cost more?
You type Listening and Reading on a computer and handwrite only the Writing paper. IDP charges AED 1,620 for it, AED 150 more than the all-computer test, and a One Skill Retake of a paper-Writing test costs AED 1,020. It is not offered for UKVI tests, and IDP does not let non-residents of the UAE sit paper-based variants. Results take 13 days instead of 1 to 5.
Can I use my Emirates ID instead of a passport?
Yes. Both providers accept a valid passport or a UAE national ID card. Upload a clear colour scan at booking and bring the same original document on the written test day and at Speaking; without it you are not admitted and the fee is lost.
How do I pay for IELTS in the UAE?
IDP: Visa or Mastercard online, cash at an IDP branch if you register offline, or bank transfer; an unpaid seat is cancelled after two days. The British Council takes online card payment.
What if I need to change or cancel my test?
Both providers need at least 5 weeks’ notice before the written test. IDP then refunds the fee minus a 25% administration fee; the British Council deducts AED 265.
